Plugin Description
When someone picks your site as a preferred source in Google Search, your articles show up more often in Top Stories, and they can carry a “preferred” badge in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google reports that people are twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it that way.
This plugin puts that button on your site and gives you full control over where it appears and how it looks.
Three ways to integrate
- Deeplink (default) — a plain link to Google’s source preferences tool. No script from Google, no third-party connection, about one kilobyte in total.
- Two-click — your own button. Google’s library is fetched only after a visitor clicks, so the third-party request follows a deliberate action.
- Google’s official widget — the integration Google recommends, with an automatically translated button. Convenient, but it loads roughly 250 KB of JavaScript from news.google.com on every page view, and that script sets cookies and local storage.
The default is the deeplink, so the plugin adds no third-party requests until you decide otherwise.
Display rules
- Automatic placement before, after or inside the content, or as a floating bar
- Insert after a chosen paragraph
- Per content type: posts, pages, custom post types
- Per view: single views, front page, blog index, category, tag and taxonomy archives, author and date archives, search results, 404
- Include or exclude individual posts by ID
- Include or exclude categories, tags and custom taxonomy terms
- Only on posts newer than a given number of days
- Only for logged-out visitors, or hidden from chosen roles
Design
Colour scheme (light, dark, follow the system, or your own colours), icon and icon position, corner radius, border, font size and weight, padding, spacing, shadow, full width, alignment and extra CSS classes — with a live preview next to the fields. You can also turn the plugin stylesheet off entirely and style the button from your theme.

Requirements from Google
Google only considers domains and subdomains for preferred sources. example.com and news.example.com are eligible, example.com/blog is not. Your site also has to be findable in Google’s source preferences tool.
Third-party services
In two-click and widget mode this plugin loads the script https://news.google.com/swg/js/v1/publisher.js from Google. This is Google’s official library for the preferred sources button. Loading it transmits the visitor’s IP address, user agent and referrer to Google, and the script sets cookies and browser storage of its own.

In deeplink mode, which is the default, no script or asset is loaded from Google. The button is then an ordinary link, and nothing is sent anywhere until a visitor clicks it.
The plugin itself never contacts any server of its own, and it sends no data to the plugin author.
